Q: Why does Auckland Traffic camera/congestion/motorway info data sometimes not match what I can see?

A: All data is provided by automated sensors from www.nzta.govt.nz and sometimes these automated sensors have glitches/make mistakes.

Q: Why does camera image get refreshed only every 60 seconds and can it be refreshed sooner?

A: Camera images that are served from NZTA web service are changed only once every 60 seconds.

Q: How often does live tile update?

A: It varies, during night once every hour, during rush hours every 5 minutes. In some situations (no/slow connection, battery low) one or more live tile updates might be skipped.

Notification with image is sent every:
  • 1 hour: 10pm..5am (inclusive)
  • 30 mins: 7pm..9pm
  • 20 mins: 10am..1pm
  • 15 mins: 2pm..3pm and 6am
  • 5 mins: 7am..9am and 4pm..6pm

Q: How much traffic does live tile consume?

A: One tile update consumes about 18~19KB, daily there’s 114 notifications sent using current schedule, in 31 days it can consume maximum of 66MB, but do note that probably not all of this is via 3G but only in those times when out of range of home/work WiFi networks.

Q: How much traffic does single pinned camera live tile consume?

A: One camera tile update consumes about 20KB, daily there’s 48 notifications sent using current schedule, in 31 days it can consume maximum of 29MB.
